Tear Stains

"Tear staining is a widespread problem among dogs and cats. The condition is called epiphora. That's when the facial hair gets wet, becoming a breeding ground for bacteria. Ter stains can also be a result of dietary issues or a reaction to the environment." (Pet Business 2009)

Tear stains do not go away overnight - it can take anywhere from 3-5 weeks. Foods containing corn, wheat, soy and artificial food colorings tend to add to the tearing. (Angel Eyes)

The product Angel Eyes work internally to get rid of the bacteria that causes the problem. You can find this product in the 30 gram, 60 gram containers at Barkz in the chicken or beef flavor.

Sheeps Wool Beds at Barkz

Here is a picture of Reef on her new sheeps wool mat. She loves it. Especially since she has started to limp due too much frisbee. Wool is an excellent source of therapy recommended by veterinarians. Wool helps to calm anxious animals, comfort puppies & kittens, and sooths the discounfrots and ailments of aging pets that have arthritis, hip dysplasia, slipped disks, diabetes and skin problems. The Wool mat is a natural insulator - warm in winter, cool in summer. The mat Reef is lying on is a 28"x40". It is machine washable and Paula dried it on high heat. (We would recomend low heat as on high it shrunk to 27"x39"). The cost of this bed ranges from $75-$160.00. Well worth it!

Dogs with Pancreatis

Dogs that have pancreatis should avoid really fatty rich foods. They need a bland diet and low fat treats. High fiber is ok. Barkz has great low fat treats - dried sweet potatos, papaya, and our biscuits.

If you're having trouble finding parking on Wednesdays due to the Wednesday Farmers Market - Barkz customers can park in the parking garage at Merrill Gardens. There are 12 (2 hour) FREE parking spots. Currently no one knows about these spots - so you'll be able to use them.

Save Kirkland's 4th of July Fireworks & Parade

Some of you may or may not know but the City of Kirkland deleted the budget for the 4th of July Fireworks and Parade. Celebrate Kirkland is a non profit organization that organizes the yearly fireworks display and the parade with the masterful leader - Penny Sweet - who c0-owns the Grape Choice.

If you enjoy the Kirkland 4th of July Fireworks and/or the parade please visit www.celebratekirkland.org and find out how you can volunteer, contribute or participate in the parade.

Barkz may not be in the parade this year due to logistics (hopefully next year) but Barkz supports Celebrate Kirkland!

June Update

Happy Summer! If you missed our Barkz Monthly Update here it is!

We have brought back some playgroups on Saturdays and we have brought back breed specific playgroups. Breed Specific Playgroups will occur on Saturdays at 3:00 pm. They are exactly like regular playgroups all safety rules will apply. Each playgroup is 30 minutes for $5.00. All dogs have to be Barkz members and be current with their vaccinations: DHPP, Bordetella and Rabies. As well all dogs are to be on flea treatments. Therefore on June 6th at 3:00 pm we will have Lab Play, June 13 - Havanese, June 20 - Newfie, June 27th - Puggle and July 11 - Bulldog Play. This gives everyone a chance to meet up with potential relatives. Please RSVP as space is limited.

Many people have asked us for informative websites. Ones we like are www.dogfoodanalysis.com and http://www.whole-dog-journal.com/ . This month's Whole Dog Journal has an interesting article about socialization of puppies.

We have some new products: new ribbon collars, new ribbon leashes & harnesses as well as new leather USA collars (under $16.00) and leather leashes (under $35). We have also brought in USA Buffalo and Elk treats (under $7)as well as some USA rawhides. The rawhides - Wholesome Hide (all cows raised in the USA and the Rawhide is made in the USA). These rawhides were written up in the May 2009 Whole Dog Journal as the best rawhides based on quality. (Small ones $1.55 to $7.50 for the large ones) We have the article in the store if you would like to read more information.

Just and FYI - We do carry sunscreen for the light skinned dogs and dogs who have white fur on their muzzle. The light skinned dogs can get sun burned.
In addition we have had great success with our doggles - sunglasses - yes they provide UV protection and great for dogs that ride on the back of motorcyles or with their heads out the window.

New Socialization Class for you and your dog starting Jul. 2 at 5:15pm. More information will be posted our website. We do still have space in our May 30th Level II class and our June 13th P1 and Oh B1 classes. We also hope to start a kids workshop in the summer.

Finally - many of you are aware that the Kirkland July 4th Fireworks and Parade are in jeopardy due to budget cutbacks. If you would like to donate or find out more information please visit www.celebratekirkland.org

Looking forward to seeing you and your dog soon.

Medium Dogs test out our toys durability!

Riley and Hercules love this monkey. The legs move when you tug. This toy is similar to the cow, the pig, and the lamb we carry with chew guard technology. It's one favorites in the play area with the medium sized dogs.

Kirkland is dog friendly!

Reef is creating a list of stores in Kirkland that are dog friendly. Of course Barkz is but here is a list we've gathered so far that you can take your dog into - as long as there is no leg lifting!

Stores that allow all sized dogs:
Sur la Table, Koap Home, Promesse, Eye Associates, Sterling Bank, Eastside Trains, Park Lane Galleries, MuShoe, Howard Mandeville Gallery, Via Lago, MuShoe, Design Within Reach, Diamond St. Jewerly, Ubrdo.

Stores that allow small dogs:
Ragamuffins, Seduce, Bella Bambini, Serendipity, Romy

Restaurants that allow dogs on their patios:
Grape Choice, Market St. Grill, Hectors, Trellis and Vovina.

If you know of anymore - please let Reef know by commenting.

Hotels that are Dog Friendly!

Right here in Kirkland - the Heathman Hotel is dog friendly. If you're traveling to Whistler for some skiing or biking - Reef recommends the Four Seasons. They provided healthy treats and a comfy bed. When traveling to Portland - Hotel Monaco is the place to be. They provide pet sitting, and your dog can come into the lounge and have a martini with you. Traveling to Hood River for some windsurfing? Check out the Hood River Hotel. It's close to the beach and Dog River Coffee Company! If you're traveling cross country on a plane and you need a carrier - drop into Barkz as we have all the bags and information for in cabin plane travel with your dog.

Enjoy your travels!

Kenmore Air is Dog Friendly!

In March, Reef took her first float plane ride up to Salt Spring. She had a little difficulty getting in and out but loved the one hour ride. She sat in the back in her own seat! The whole staff at Kenmore Air were wonderful to her. We highly recommend them for island hoping with your dog.
